MEANWHILE, SOMEWHERE...

Beyond the Frame, by the Lake,
and Face to Face in the Street.

Festival-goers looking the same way, car lovers talking beside a lake, and a street figure meeting another face.

LEMGO, GERMANY

Everyone is looking beyond the frame

A four-day town festival began in Lemgo, Germany, on August 28. In a photograph from that day, people in black top hats and a blue-and-white band fill the old market square. Yet the detail that held my attention is not actually in the picture. Nearly every face is turned toward the same point just beyond the right edge.

Perhaps they were waiting for a musical cue, or for someone to arrive; the photograph does not tell us. Everyone is formally dressed and the instruments are ready, but for that instant they look like ordinary people wondering whether it is time yet. The local report says four days of events rested on a great deal of preparation. Even a festival with a long tradition may begin each year with a brief pause like this. I would probably turn away from the main event first, just to see what everyone outside the frame was watching.

BELFORT, FRANCE

After the cars pass by, the afternoon stays by the lake

Belfort’s gathering of convertibles began beside the Étang des Forges on August 30. A photograph from that morning shows a silver car with its roof down beside a red entrance arch, while several people stand talking around it. The plan was to display the cars in the town centre, take a drive, return to the lake for a noon picnic, and spend the afternoon with games along the shore.

I like that a car event devoted the second half of its day to lunch and time by the water. Some visitors may have gone home remembering model names; others may remember the conversation under a tree for longer. Looking at the picture, the people talking beside the cars interest me more than the cars themselves. The vehicles provided the excuse, then the lake took over the afternoon. That order feels exactly right for a small-town summer Sunday.

L’ISLE-SUR-LA-SORGUE, FRANCE

“Who is the other?” A figure meets another face

A photograph taken in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue on August 29 records the street-art festival Buzz'art. Against a pale stone wall, a dark figure lifts a second face in both hands and holds it at eye level. A small card at its feet asks, “Qui est l'autre?”—“Who is the other?”

After reading that question, I looked again and could no longer decide whether the figure was showing the face to us or being watched by it. The detailed programme for that day and the work’s title have not been confirmed, so the photograph must carry this small story on its own. Still, one question placed on an ordinary street could slow the walk to the shops. No gallery door is required; another face is simply waiting at the corner. I suspect I would pass it, keep thinking about it, and then walk back for one more look.
