Schoolchildren dance, then village elders take the same stage
What caught my attention was that the village elders took the stage immediately after the primary-school dancers. Warukin held its fifth Dayak Maanyan cultural festival from August 21 to 23. At the opening, the school arts group performed a new dance, followed by elders dancing Mira Pakat, whose name expresses unity.
Two generations dancing in turn make “preserving culture” easier to understand. The children may have watched the elders’ steps while the elders considered the children’s new choreography. Visitors and small businesses also came, but the centre of the day was ordinary village time: an old dance and the next generation occupying the same stage.
