HOPEFIELD, SOUTH AFRICA
Two hundred wildflower species, reassembled by a town
More than two hundred fynbos species are not merely picked and lined up. They are rebuilt into something resembling the landscape they came from. That is the centerpiece of the Hopefield Fynbos Show, held August 27–30 in this small town on South Africa's West Coast.
The official site says local volunteers collect plants, assemble the display, welcome visitors, guide people through the hall and help take everything apart again. Before learning every flower's name, I would like to watch separate bundles of plants become one convincing patch of countryside under all those hands. The dismantling matters too. A landscape appears for four days, then the same town carefully unthreads it. That last job, easily missed by visitors, feels like part of the flower weekend.
